Spring is on the way!

Our first daffodils are opening!  It’s comforting to see them and the light of longer days. It’s been a cold winter, by California standards at least. I’m ready for winter to be over.

The good news of winter is that our wood burning fireplace insert has been a great investment!  It has nearly paid for itself in electricity savings already. We only ran our inefficient electric forced-air heat about six hours total this fall and winter. I think we’re in the clear for needing it any more this year.

Now that spring is on it’s way I’m starting to think about gardening projects. We need to move the greenhouse to the back yard so we can put in a fence. I need to decide how I’ll set up my garden at this house. Do I want to do raised beds or big containers?

I’m already thinking about summer vegetables! I want to grow tomatoes, peppers, onions, herbs, strawberries, lettuce and carrots this year. We also have plans to plant a few dwarf citrus trees. It will be so nice to have fresh lemons available all year from our own tree!

Is spring on the way where you live? What gardening projects do you have in mind this year? Share your thoughts in the comments!

  1. We don’t have a very good spot in our yard for a large vegetable garden, so we plan on doing container gardening again. Mainly tomatoes and chiles, since they are the easiest for us!

    • I’m leaning towards containers this year too. I already have a lot of pots to work with and we’re still not sure what we want to do for landscape in the backyard. Tomatoes are always a good choice! So easy and so tasty!
