The mystery flowers in the front bed turned out to be two kinds of daffodils. Very pretty way to start spring.

Garden Surprises

One of the surprises of buying a new house is finding out what’s in the garden. This house has a large yard with great potential, but was neglected for many years. The entire yard was covered in ivy, it was even growing up the oak trees, the fences and on the house. My wonderful husband has spent many hours digging out the ivy and there are still many hours ahead of him.
A few days ago I found these bulbs growing in one of the front beds. It’s amazing how fast they grow, especially when the weather is nice. They are something from the daffodil family. We’ll know exactly what in a few more days.

Spring planting with the kids
I’m so glad that it’s spring. This year my kids are finally old enough to play in the yard with minimal supervision while I do some gardening. For the past four years I have had a terrible time trying to garden because I had little kids. Sean and Audrey are old enough now to enjoy being in the backyard and even help me with projects.
I bought a 6-pack of strawberries and a single tomato plant at OSH on Tuesday. I was picking up bags of bark to spruce up the backyard a little before Sean’s birthday party. Our backyard currently consists of a rectangle of grass, a small patio and dirt. I had to resist the urge to buy A BUNCH of plants. So many fun plants that would look great along the front walkway or in the backyard! But I didn’t have the extra money, so I kept pushing my cart. Here’s how our quick little project turned out.
Obviously it’s not January 2003. Somehow the date stamp got turned on and I didn’t know it until I downloaded the photos. I just turned it off. Who wants the ugly date stamp on their photos anyway?

Spring is in the air
It’s beginning to look a lot like spring around here. The ornamental plum trees in our neighborhood are starting to bloom. The roses and geraniums that I severely pruned when we moved in are sprouting new leaves. Yes it’s definitely spring: I got in my car the other morning and noticed a fine layer of dust on my windshield. It’s windy in this valley so dirt and dust are normal. But as put the key in the ignition and looked up and I noticed something. That dust is yellow. Oh, that’s not dust! That’s pollen, a whole lot of it! Time to refill my allergy prescription. Luckily, we have several days of rain in the forecast which will clean the air of all the pollen. Welcome Spring, I’m glad to see you!
