Pinterest – A Distraction to Rival Facebook!

Have you heard of Pinterest?  It’s an online pin board where you can keep track of things you like from all over the web.  Instead of making endless folders in your browser favorites list, you can pin thumbnail size photos with links back to the original webpage.  You can customize the categories and add as many “boards” and “pins” as you like.

The fun of Pinterest comes in following other pinners. Much the way you “follow” people on Twitter, you can follow other pinners that you like. In the set-up process a new user chooses which topics to follow.  Things like arts and crafts, art, design, food & drink, gardening, cooking, etc.

I have been thrilled with all of the ideas shared on Pinterest. I have found tons of fun recipes, craft ideas and DIY projects. I used an idea I found there to make candies for Thanksgiving that looked like little acorns.  They were fun and easy to make.

The next projects I’m thinking of trying is making my own liquid hand soap. I love the smell of Mrs. Meyers products and this project allows you to make a gallon of it ($50 retail) for about $5. What a great savings!  I probably would have never found this blog if I hadn’t been for Pinterest.

I find that I’m spending less time on Facebook and more time browsing Pinterest.  At least it feels like I’m doing something productive when I’m gathering new ideas for recipes and crafts.

The one thing that is a bit irksome about Pinterest is that you need to be invited to join (kind of like Google+) or you go on a waiting list to be added. If you are interested and want an invite just email me at kerry@lesserhomesandgardens.com and I’ll invite you!  Happy pinning out there!

Dishwasher Cleaner is Great!

Do you use dishwasher cleaner?  I’m not talking about soap for washing the dishes in the machine, I mean the special cleaner for keeping your machine in good working order.

Finish is the brand I’m familiar with, although there may be others.  It’s very simple to use and always gives me good results.  So why use a dishwasher cleaner?  It removes hard water buildup on the heating element in the bottom of the machine.  We have very hard water where we live now, so I like to use a bottle of cleaner every three months to remove the hard water buildup.  Having a heating element that isn’t getting hot enough can leave your dishes less than clean!

I frequently find coupons for this product in the Sunday paper insert, so keep your eyes peeled and grab some when it goes on sale.

Take a break from spring cleaning…

I came across this poem a month ago while looking up home-preschooling.  I’m using it in the MOPS newsletter this month and also wanted to share it with you.  It’s a reminder that there is more to life than a clean house. The time we have while our children are young is so precious.  Now that it’s spring, it’s time to get out there and show your children the wonders of nature.

I Took His Hand and Followed
Mrs. Roy L. Peifer

My dishes went unwashed today,

I didn’t make the bed,

I took his hand and followed

Where his eager footsteps led.

Oh yes, we went adventuring,

My little son and I…

Exploring all the great outdoors

Beneath the summer sky

We waded in a crystal stream,

We wandered through a wood…

My kitchen wasn’t swept today

But life was gay and good.

We found a cool, sun-dappled glade

And now my small son knows

How Mother Bunny hides her nest,

Where jack-in-the-pulpit grows.

We watched a robin feed her young,

We climbed a sunlit hill…

Saw cloud-sheep scamper through the sky,

We plucked a daffodil.

That my house was neglected,

That I didn’t brush the stairs,

In twenty years, no one on earth

Will know, or even care.

But that I’ve helped my little boy

To noble manhood grow,

In twenty years, the whole wide world

May look and see and know.
